Winterim 2003

Every February we plan and organize a series of specialized classes and activities for the students.   Community members are invited to share their passions and expertise with the students.  This provides the students with an opportunity to explore new activities, learn more about a topic that interests them and breaks up the winter monotony.  It also provides students another opportunity to interact with community members.
Sectionals have included field trips to the Humane Society, Veteran’s Home, Gering Courier, and several area businesses to learn the ins and outs of the business world.  We have offered language and cultural instruction in American Sign Language, German, Japanese, French and Spanish.  Many of the activities are arts and craft oriented:  building birdhouses and birdfeeders, glass etching, crocheting, basketmaking, calligraphy, rubber stamping, scrapbooking, photography, origami, sculpture, pottery and quilting.  Scientific endeavors include model rocketry, wildlife world and aerodynamics.  Cooking is also very popular and we have offered classes in baking desserts, breads and cookies.  Cake decorating was another offering.  Activity based classes include charades, swimming, horsemanship, and rock wall climbing.  Chess, checkers, web site creation and computer simulations have provided a logical and analytical choice.  First Aid and an understanding of handicaps were choices.  The fine arts have included storytelling, visits to the Art Center, theatre, recorders, dance and modern jazz.
