Information Processing

In this course students will develop business foratting skills, proofreading skills, and an overall understanding of written communications common to the workplace. Students will use state of the art computers and software to prepare personal and business documents such as letters, form letters, memos, newsletters and e-mail communications. Additionally, there is significant emphasis focused on formatting research papers for high school and college courses. The format used for research papers has been aligned with the English department requirements.

The course will appeal to any student wishing to become proficient in word processing with an emphasis on accuracy and formatting skills.  An up-to-date version of Microsoft Word, commonly used by many businesses and colleges, will be available for student learning.  Upon completion of this course, students will have developed a thorough proficiency in word processing skills that are essential throughout their high school and post-secondary careers.

Personal Finance

Students are introduced to the fundamental principals of personal finance.  Through hands on activities, students will learn how to manage a checking account and reconcile a bank statement.  Topics for discussion also include personal financial planning, use of credit, savings plans and risk management.  Students will explore the stock market through an on-line stock market simulation game. 

This course also offers a brief unit, Career Exploration, which will help students make a plan that will lead to an enjoyable career and financial security. Students identify their self-interests, learn how to research careers, discover possible career paths, explore different jobs, and develop a career plan.  Students will learn how to prepare essential job acquisition documents and participate in a mock job interview activity.

General Business

This course begins with an introduction to the factors of production, types of businesses and organizational structures of businesses.  Students will become entrepreneurs and explore the world of business through the creation of their own business.  Students will develop a marketing strategy, write a business plan, study management techniques and discuss the social responsibility of the business community.

Explore Careers

The adventure begins with activities designed to help students discover personal likes and dislikes, encourage group unity, and to provide an opportunity for students to practice goal setting and achievement.  Students will explore the world of work and the choices available to them by searching the library stacks for books on careers, surfing the net for career options, and Career Cruising, an awesome program designed to help students discover the direction they want to travel in the future.  But the fun doesn't stop here, as a class, students will pool their resources to create and produce their own video on the careers they have discovered.

Economic Perspectives

This course begins by giving students an overview of basic economic concepts and terminology.  Students will study the world of economics from both the microeconomic and macroeconomic perspective.  From the microeconomic perspective, the class will explore the choices made by consumers and producers in the market place and how those choices affect supply and demand.  The macroeconomic perspective includes topics such as GDP, unemployment, inflation, the money supply and the Federal Reserve System. 

Accounting I

This first year accounting course focuses on the General Journal approach to accounting.  Students will learn basic accounting concepts and procedures for several different types of business organizations such as: a service business organized as a sole proprietorship; a merchandising business organized as partnership; and a merchandising business organized as a corporation.  Students will keep financial records and prepare financial reports for simulation companies.  The objective of the course is to provide students with accounting knowledge that will prepare them for an office position or for further study of business in college.

Accounting II

PREREQUISITE: B AVERAGE IN ACCOUNTING 1

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  This course has been designed to build on the accounting concepts and procedures learned during your first year accounting course.  The focus of this course will center on cost accounting, managerial accounting, not-for-profit accounting and financial analysis.  Students will explore accounting for corporations and learn inventory methods.  Accurate financial records analysis is another major focus of this course.
