| ENGLISH 9 1001 CREDITS: 5 PER SEMESTER PREREQUISITE: SECOND SEMESTER RESEARCH PAPER WILL REQUIRE SKILLS TAUGHT IN INFORMATION PROCESSING. GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Grammar: Students will review the basic rules of grammar and learn to apply those rules in vocabulary and writing exercises. Writing: Through journal entries students will review the basic structure of a paragraph. They will expand that knowledge when they research a historical event and write historical fiction based on the chosen event. The second semester, the students will research a historical person, event or site to present in a 3-5 page research paper in conjunction with Civics and Info Processing. Literature: Throughout the year students will read Greek Drama, Shakespearean Drama, short stories, poetry, and two novels. Students will read, analyze, discuss, write about and demonstrate knowledge of these different genres and how the lessons taught through literature apply to their own lives. COURSE INTENDED FOR: 9th ENGLISH 10 1102 CREDITS: 5 PER SEMESTER PREREQUISITE: SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF ENGLISH 9 AND INFORMATION PROCESSING GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Students in this course will engage in a review of basic grammar in preparation for more advanced grammar applications to be used in writing a short research paper. The second nine weeks of the course will involve students in the study of three literary genres: short stories, poetry, and drama. Students will read, analyze, discuss, write about and demonstrate knowledge of the differing requirements of each genre while increasing their reading comprehension skills. Students will work on expanding their vocabulary. This course is designed to introduce students to public speaking. They will learn to create a thesis statement, write an introduction, develop supporting paragraphs and conclude in written form and then present this product in oral form. Students will learn audience analysis skills, speech criticism and analysis techniques, specific formats for a variety of speech styles, listening skills, research skills for documentation in oral presentations, communication strategies for different audiences, and enhanced delivery techniques. COURSE INTENDED FOR: 10th ENGLISH 11 1103 CREDITS: 5 PER SEMESTER PREREQUISITE: SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF ENGLISH 9 AND 10 GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Writing: Students will understand and demonstrate a knowledge of four structural patterns (descriptive, narrative, expository, and persuasive) and how to apply those patterns to different purposes. Students will learn the importance of using standard English in the presentation of formal essays. American Literature: Students will learn the basic elements of a story: character, setting, plot, point of view and theme. Students will understand the influence of culture and history on literature. Students will learn to identify common themes that appear in literature and understand how they apply to present academic, personal and societal issues. COURSE INTENDED FOR: 11th ENGLISH 12 1144 CREDITS: 5 PER SEMESTER PREREQUISITE: SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF ENGLISH 11 AND INFORMATION PROCESSING GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Students will read a variety of classical literature reflecting a variety of genres: short stores, epic poetry, drama, and novels. They will learn to analyze the effectiveness of their reading comprehension and to write reflective and responsive essays to the literature read. A focus will be made on identification of specific writing problems and instruction and practice will be engaged to teach to those deficiencies. Writing a research paper will also be accomplished in this course. Students will engage in research utilizing both library and computer research skills, will collate the materials garnered, will organize the writing materials, will write with structure, will utilize the research to proof the paper, and will complete the paper utilizing a word processor. COURSE INTENDED FOR: 12th PRACTICAL ENGLISH 1030 CREDITS: 5 PER SEMESTER PREREQUISITE: NONE GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Students will learn the basics of grammar and literature. Students will learn the process preparing for a career and the job interview process. Students will learn about contracts and human rights laws. Students will read, comprehend, and discuss a variety of American literature. MODE OF PRESENTATION: Lecture, textbook, overhead transparencies, discussion, question and answer, workbook, and practical application. COURSE INTENDED FOR: 11th-12th JOURNALISM 1004 CREDITS: 5 PER SEMESTER PREREQUISITE: SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF ENGLISH 11 AND INFORMATION PROCESSING OR WRITTEN APPROVAL OF THE JOURNALISM ADVISER. GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Students will learn the history of journalism and the fundamental skills of journalistic writing including: ethics, differentiation between fact and opinion, interview techniques, computer desktop publishing, layout techniques, photography, and the importance of meeting deadlines. Students are responsible for publishing a community publication, which provides them a realistic journalistic experience. MODE OF PRESENTATION: Lecture, textbook, discussion, question and answer, and practical application. COURSE INTENDED FOR: 11th-12th COLLEGE BOUND ENGLISH 1104 CREDITS: 5 PER SEMESTER PREREQUISITE: SENIOR STATUS, AND SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF ENGLISH 11 AND INFORMATION PROCESSING WITH AN AVERAGE OF C OR BETTER GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The students will be presented with materials relevant to the college bound student concerning college time management, course structures, differing skills necessary beyond the public school setting, and tips on being more successful at the college level. Students will also learn about advanced usage problems of English writing styles. Discursive prose will be introduced to them and they will also study a drama. Students will research, compose, revise and produce a research paper. MODE OF PRESENTATION: lecture, textbook, discussion, cooperative group learning, student oral presentations, question and answer, workbook for vocabulary enrichment, and videotape.
