CONSUMER SCIENCE I Comprehensive

CREDITS: 5 PER SEMESTER

PREREQUISITE: Junior High Exploratory recommended, helpful but not required

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Consumer Science I, Comprehensive, allows student exposure to the major areas of Family and Consumer Science and provides a knowledge base for selection of more advanced courses. Major areas of study include: self-esteem, time management, decision-making, parenting, nutrition, and food preparation, clothing management and housing/home furnishings.

MODE OF PRESENTATION: Lecture, discussion, textbook, videos related to the subject area, overhead transparencies, group work, field trips, workbook and practical laboratory experiences.

CONSUMER SCIENCE II (Foods/Nutrition and Parenting) 0102

CREDITS: 5 PER SEMESTER

PREREQUISITE: CONSUMER SCIENCE I OR JUNIOR HIGH EXPLORATORY

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: (First semester) The course provides the students with an extended knowledge of nutrition and food preparation with an emphasis on wellness. The course involves the study of scientific principles and the cultural and social aspects of food and nutrition. Management of time, energy, and money is integrated throughout the course. FCCLA in integrated within the Family Consumer Science curriculum.

(Second semester) The course is designed to help students understand the challenges and responsibilities of parenting. It includes a study of the growth and development from prenatal through childhood. A major portion of the course helps students understand how a child sees the world and at the same time the students gain a sense of the biological and social forces the influence the development of a child.

CONSUMER SCIENCE III 0134 - International Foods/Fashion Strategies/Housing and Interior Design

CREDITS: 5 PER SEMESTER

PREREQUISITE: CONSUMER SCIENCE I

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: (First Semester) The course provides students with an extended knowledge of nutrition and food preparation of foods from around the world. This course involves the study of climates, geographies, cultures, and cuisines. Management of time, energy, and money are integrated throughout the course.

(Second Semester) The course provides students the opportunity to meet needs in clothing. A study of the cultural influences of clothing is included along with fashion trends, consumer-related issues, and color and design principles. Wardrobe planning includes the study of ready-to-wear and garment construction. The class allows students to explore options available in housing selection and design. The course provides hands
on experiences working with floor plans, furniture arrangements, storage space, windows, and the elements and principles of design. FCCLA is integrated within the Family Consumer Science curriculum.

CONSUMER SCIENCE IV 0143 LIFE FACS

CREDITS: 5 PER SEMESTER

PREREQUISITE: CONSUMER SCIENCE I

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The course provides students the opportunity to meet the needs of the family as the basic unit of society. The course will help students with self- discovery, career research and planning, on-the-job effectiveness and social/civic responsibility. It will help students deal with hypothetical situations that involve students
in work-related content and suggests world of work skills that may be needed for the future. FCCLA is integrated within the Family Consumer Science curriculum.
